Why your breaker keeps tripping

A breaker that trips once in a while is not broken. It is doing exactly what it was designed to do: cutting the power before a wire overheats. The useful question is why it keeps happening, because the four common causes look similar at the panel and get handled very differently.

Overload: too much on one circuit

The most common cause and the least dangerous. A 15-amp circuit can only carry so much, and a kettle, a toaster and a space heater on the same kitchen circuit will exceed it every time. If the trip happens when a specific combination of things runs at once, and the breaker resets and holds afterward, an overload is the likely story.

The fix is not a bigger breaker. The breaker size is matched to the wire in the wall, and a larger breaker on the same wire removes the protection without removing the problem. The real fix is either moving loads around or adding a circuit for the equipment that needs one.

Short circuit: trips instantly, every time

If the breaker snaps off the moment you reset it, or the moment a specific switch or appliance is touched, current is finding a path it should never take. That can be a damaged cord, a failed appliance, or a wiring fault in a box. Stop resetting it. Repeatedly forcing power into a short is how insulation damage becomes a fire.

Unplug what you can on the circuit and try once more. If it holds, the problem is in whatever you unplugged. If it still snaps off with everything unplugged, the fault is in the wiring and it needs a professional with a tester, not more attempts.

Ground faults and arc faults: the picky protectors

Newer panels have GFCI and AFCI breakers that watch for more than overload. GFCIs trip on current leaking to ground, which is what protects people around water. AFCIs trip on the electrical signature of arcing, which is what precedes many wiring fires. Both are more sensitive than a standard breaker, and both can be tripped by a failing appliance long before anything feels wrong.

A GFCI or AFCI that trips occasionally with a particular device is pointing at that device. One that trips on an empty circuit is pointing at the wiring. Either way, the breaker is the messenger, not the problem.

A worn breaker: rare, but real

Breakers age. One that has tripped many times, or that lives in a panel with a known defect history, can start tripping below its rating or, worse, fail to trip at all. If a circuit trips with almost nothing running and the wiring tests clean, the breaker itself is suspect. That diagnosis needs a meter, and swapping a breaker is panel work with the cover off: it is not a homeowner job.

What is worth a call

Same-circuit trips that keep returning, any breaker that is warm to the touch, any burning smell or crackle at the panel, and any breaker that will not reset cleanly. Those are the situations where the honest answer is to have it looked at rather than lived with. Diagnosing a repeat trip is quick work for someone with the right tester, and the written quote comes before anything else does.
