Six signs your electrical panel is due
Panels do not fail on a schedule. Plenty of 40-year-old panels are doing fine, and the age of the house alone is not a verdict. But some signs are worth taking seriously, because the panel is the one part of the electrical system everything else depends on.
1. The insurance company is asking questions
Insurers in Ontario routinely flag fuse panels, 60-amp services and certain breaker brands with documented failure histories. If a renewal letter is asking for an electrical inspection or quoting a surcharge, that is not a scare tactic; it reflects real claims data. An assessment by a licensed contractor, with the paperwork to prove it, is usually what resolves it, whether or not a replacement turns out to be needed.
2. Fuses, or a brand with a known history
A fuse panel that has been left alone may still work, but it predates most of what a modern house plugs in, and replacement fuses invite the classic mistake of oversizing. Separately, some breaker panel brands sold in Canada decades ago have documented problems with breakers failing to trip. If you are not sure what is in the basement, a photo of the open panel door is enough for a first opinion.
3. No room left
A panel with every slot filled, or with two wires landed under single breakers, has run out of honest capacity. Tandem breakers and creative doubling are how panels get crowded past what they were listed for. If every renovation conversation starts with where to find a spare slot, the panel is the renovation.
4. Lights dip when big loads start
A brief flicker when the well pump, dryer or air conditioner kicks in can be normal on a loaded service. Lights that dim noticeably and regularly are a sign the service is working at its edge, and worth measuring rather than guessing about. The difference between annoying and undersized is a load calculation, which is arithmetic, not opinion.
5. Heat, buzz or crackle at the panel
A panel should be silent and at room temperature. Warmth on the cover, a buzzing breaker, or any crackling sound means a connection is loose or a breaker is failing, and loose connections generate heat exactly where you least want it. This one is not a someday item; it is a call.
6. The future is bigger than the past
An EV charger, a heat pump, a hot tub, a workshop, a secondary suite: each is a large load the original service was never sized for. Sometimes the existing panel carries the addition with room to spare, and a load calculation proves it. Sometimes load management gets a 100-amp service through an EV install without an upgrade. And sometimes the honest answer is 200 amps. The point of an assessment is that you decide with numbers instead of habit.
